Pike
Place Public Market
Until the Space
Needle was erected for the 1960 World's Fair in Seattle, the Pike
Place Public Market sign was perhaps the City's most enduring
image. Not a true street clock, but nevertheless a venerable time
piece that thousands of tourists and residents alike set their
watches by. Oddly, if the typical tourist were asked to recall
from memory what this famous sign actually says, they would almost
certainly reply "Pike Place Market", rather than the
actual "Public Market Center" that appears on the sign.
