Salem's vintage downtown has always struggled in
the shadow of nearby Portland. Located just 40 miles south of
the Portland area, Salem is Oregon's state capitol, and hosts
dozens of historic buildings. Sadly, for every historic structure,
there is another vacant lot or run down gas station where another
historic structure once stood.
Today, Salem's downtown
finally seems to be gathering steam, and the clocks pictured on
these pages are in the heart of the gradually renewing business
district.
