Portland is a city of gardeners and many
      have spread their efforts into the parking strips. Here in the
      Portland's St. Johns district, a naturalistic mix of sword fern,
      azalea, burning bush, blue Spanish bluebells and a tough variegated
      ivy grown on a raised bed, framing a large Norway maple.

      
Within the bed (below), a small drainage
      swale prevents sidewalk and driveway runoff from entering the
      street, and instead deeply irrigates the raised bed. However,
      this bed also includes an irrigation system for use during Oregon's
      typical late summer drought.
