Planting Strips Truckee, California
At first sight, these cast-iron enclosures (above, below) along Truckee's main street resemble the Victorian fences found in the old cemetery at nearby Virginia City. The fences have an obvious function in this heavily traveled streetscape, protecting a lush planting of perennials from foot traffic. Because Truckee is snowbound in the winter, there is little need or purpose for evergreen shrubs in this design - though evergreens are a good idea in most perennial plantings where winter interest and ground cover is needed. Clumps of mountain mahogany and Douglas maple grow in many of the raised brick planters in Truckee, providing welcome shade in the brilliant mountain summers, and an excellent sense of enclosure for pedestrians.
