Planting Strips Seaside, Oregon...

The Oregon Coast is famously wet, windy and gray, but the mild climate is also excellent for growing perennials. This fact was not lost on the City of Seaside when Broadway was rebuilt in the 1980s to enhance the pedestrian space and move automobiles off the "strip." Where curbs extend to create a narrow point and pedestrian crossing (above) spring is marked by early-blooming perennials, emerging red foliage on a smoke tree and flowering cherries.

In another section (below), multi-trunk vine maple - a native species - grows from a bed of hosta, daylilies and boxwood.

Another view (below, bottom) shows the mix of plants and small trees along Broadway and in the adjacent plazas that adjoin the main street. Though large trees would be desirable in most towns, these plantings are located just two blocks from the beach, and taller species would be vulnerable to winter gales that regularly blow in excess of 50 mph.
