Historic 'C' Street - Virginia City, Nevada Great Sidewalks
The plank sidewalks (above) that line 'C' Street are one of Virginia City's trademarks, and a noisy delight to visitors looking for an "Old West" experience. In several places, the planks actually rest on a concrete base (seen near the parked car in the image above), which maintains the traditional design while extending the life of planks. The posts that support balconies and overhangs are as eclectic as the buildings themselves, yet create a pleasant pedestrian, if narrow, travelway. The space between posts is used for benches and trash barrels. In these adjoining views from a balcony (above, below) above 'C' Street, the steep rise of Mt. Davidson can be seen in the background, along with homes built into the hillside above the commercial district. These views also show how the covered sidewalks shade storefronts and display windows from midday sun, an important function in the Nevada desert. In both images, hanging shop signs can also be seen above the sidewalks - another benefit of the balcony and awning design.
