Historic 'C' Street - Virginia City, Nevada Living History
One of the finest remnants of old Virginia City is the spectacular St. Mary's of the Mountains church, located just downhill from the commercial district. The presence of large institutional buildings like St. Mary's separated Virginia City from other mining boomtowns. Here, real civilization took root during the boom period, with large schools, theaters, hotels and churches anchoring the community in a way that few frontier towns could claim. Today, St. Mary's is still an important feature in the identity of Virginia City, as well as a tourist destination for its lavish interior of soaring stained-glass windows.
