Donner Pass Road - Truckee, California Street Trees

In the harsh Truckee climate, choices for street trees and other landscaping that can endure the winter cold and summer drought are limited. Further, the need to remove heavy snowfall from streets and sidewalks in winter makes tree trunks and landscaping vulnerable to damage. Truckee has managed these difficultives with unique masonry tree planters (above) that allow low, multi-trunked species to grow in a protected space, and provide plenty of shade for pedestrians. Some planters also incorporate other landscaping and benches (below). In both views, note how angled parking provides an excellent pedestrian buffer from moving traffic.

Throughout the project, the designers respect the town's history with materials that blend with the historic architure and natural surroundings of Truckee. Below, a concrete post footing includes an evergreen tree design in the traditional lodge style.
