Donner Pass Road - Truckee, California Commercial Row

The historic storfronts of Truckee that front the north side of Donner Pass Highway have been known as "Commercial Row" for nearly a century (above). Many of the buildings date to the early 1900s, and give the town a powerful sense of history. Unlike most main streets, Donner Pass Road in Truckee is one-sided, with a rail station on the opposite frontage.

Thanks to the arrival of I-80, located north of Commercial Row, the old highway remains a manageable two-lane route complete with angled parking (below) that not only allow for more spaces, but also acts as a traffic calming strategy and pedestrian buffer. One deficiency in the design is a lack of marked clearly pedestrian crossings; here, you can see that even the crosswalk paint (lower left corner) has completely disappeared from the travel lanes.
