Columbia River Highway in Troutdale, Oregon Sidewalk Details

At just eight feet, the sidewalks along Troutdale's main street are too narrow to handle more than pedestrian travel. But many storefronts have been constructed to augment the relatively narrow sidewalk with alcoves that allow for planters, a-board signs, cafe tables and benches.

In this photo, the light bricked area in front of the dental office marks the private property "alcove" that augments the paved sidewalk. This is a time-tested approach for expanding the pedestrian realm, yet few main street projects attempt this design.
