"A" Avenue, Lake Oswego, Oregon Traffic Platform

The most profound design element of the "A" Avenue design is also the most subtle. This raised intersection platform is located at the main pedestrian connection along First Street that connects to the new Millennium Plaza City Park (located to the right of this view), and where the vacant parcel in the background will soon be redeveloped with a signature mixed-use structure.

The primary purpose of the raised platform is to slow vehicles on "A" Avenue as they cross through the First Street intersection, and approach State Street (located to the left of this view) with a combination of contrasting paving textures and a noticeable 4" lift in street elevation. But the platform also creates a more inviting pedestrian crossing of "A" Avenue, and marks the symbolic "center" of the redeveloped downtown district. The median monument in the east leg of the intersection is shown in more detail in the next slide.
