"A" Avenue, Lake Oswego, Oregon Sidewalk Planning
This image shows careful attention to the fundamental need to differentiate between pedestrian travel space (right) and sidewalk activity space (left), where benches, street trees, planters, bus shelters, news stands and other urban furniture are located. Too often, sidewalk demensions fail to consider the need for BOTH travel and sidewalk activities. This example allocates 6 feet of clear space for pedestrian travel and 6 feet for other activities along the outer portion of the sidewalk. The design uses tree grates and fixed benches to define the two spaces. < Back to Lake Oswego Main Page n Next Image > All images are ©Tom Kloster, 2001, and may only be used by permission
