Main Street - Independence, Oregon Curb Extensions

The Independence project uses curb extensions at both ends of Main Street to serve as visual gateways to the historic district, calm approaching traffic and provide safer pedestrian crossings. The north gateway at Main and C Streets (above, left) includes two large extensions and striped crossing at an unsignalized intersection. Here, some vehicles yield to pedestrians, but most pedestrians must wait before attemting to cross.

At the south end of Main Street, the large curb extensions (shown on the previous page) at the intersection with Monmouth Avenue are located at a controlled, 3-way intersection with stop signs. The tire marks on the new curb (above, right) at this intersection are thus more likely attributed to oversized vehicles adjusting to the new design than to speeding cars.
