East Main Street - Charlottesville, Virginia Pedestrian Detail
Concrete pavers are used to mark where local streets intersect the pedestrian mall, giving walkers a visual reference to the surrounding downtown street system. Near the center of the mall, a memorial plaza honors the community leaders who had the vision to initiate construction of the mall in 1976. The memorial, and a number of mall improvements commemorated the 25th anniversay of the mall project on July 4, 2001. This group of street fixtures shows examples of the main elements used throughout the project: four-globe, downcast street lamps, concrete planters, waste bins and bollards that define the pedestrian walkways and block cross traffic.
