Main Street - Cedar City, Utah Built on Tourism
By the 1900s, a Union Pacific Railroad spur had reached Cedar City, and the railroad began to market the town (above) as a jumpoff point to Cedar Breaks, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park. Tourists arrived at Cedar City's railroad depot (below) to waiting buses that would carry them to the scenic parks above the city. The historic station still stands along Main Street. Today, the historic 1920s downtown (below) is the focus of a renewed civic interest. After decades of decline, Cedar City embarked on a campaign to revitalize the historic downtown, where Highway 91 had gradually eroded the pedestrian on Main Street. With Interstate-15 now diverting heavy traffic around Main Street, and new street improvements and civic facilities along Main, the historic downtown is returning to prosperity.
