Main Street - Cedar City, Utah Founded on Iron Ore

The relatively brief history of Cedar City dates to the mid-1800s, when Brigham Young dispatched Mormon settlers to the area to mine iron ore from rich sandstone deposts (above, as seen in Cedar Breaks National Monument). Though the iron mines declined over the next few decades, Cedar City (below) became the center of a growing agricultural industry in southern Utah. At the turn of the 20th Century, Southern Utah University was established Cedar City.
