Bricks & Mortar ...Philadelphia, Pennsylvania...
The historic curb and gutter system (left) in thsi historic districts of Philadelphia uses cut stone curbs against a slate guttter that also served as a tread for wagons. The aggregate fill along the center of the treadway presumably served as drainage, and a more forgiving surface for horses. Some street sections (right) employ slate pavers entirely, usually set in an irregular basket weave pattern.
