In the nation's
      birthplace, Colonial streets (above) are maintained in their
      original form within Independence National Historic Park. The rustic streets use a system
      of brick pavers for most streets and sidewalks, with slate treads
      along the center of some streets. Today's version has aggregate
      embedded in mortar (below), though the orginal design probably
      used loose rock between the treads.
