In Oregon's capital
      city, a series of downtown renewal projects have focused on upgrading
      the sidewalk environment. A number of unique, tiled medallions
      have been constructed on major street corners (above), filling
      generous curb extensions, and dramatically raising the visual
      profile of both sidewalks and pedestrians.


      
Each medallion
      is design to reflect its surrounds, with colors and textures
      borrowing from adjacent buildings (below). They are constructed
      from a variety of materials, including ceramic tiles and stained
      concrete.
