Portland's most
      famous paving is found in Pioneer Courthouse Square (above), which serves as the city's "living
      room" and is home to daily events that draw large lunchtime
      crowds. The square was completed in 1984, in part with proceeds
      from the sale of individual bricks to Portland sponsors (below).
      This was one of the first projects in the country to employ this
      technique to fund a major improvement. Newer dates (below, right)
      are evident where the brick sponsorship program is still being
      used to rebuild and expand parts of the square.
