Bricks & Mortar Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

At the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers in Pittsburgh, the site of former steel factories has evolved into The Point State Park. Most notable in the park are generous, street-like pedestrian walkways that are a crazy quilt of paving solutions. Newer additions include elaborately textured and stained concrete walkways (above), while older sections feature simple brick and recycled cobble surfaces (below).

Cobbles are most frequently used around trees, where the patterns for trimming the brick vary as widely as the trees themselves. In the example below, a simple brick ring is scaled to the needs of a black locust.

In the view below, the full effect of the Pittsburgh paving systems can be seen, with  textured concrete and concrete bricks forming the most heavily-used surfaces, recycled cobbles and brick for border surfaces and a low wall of large boulders defining the walkways.
